Taco Pizza

This dish is a bit nostalgic for me. Here in Missouri, Casey’s General Stores are in many small towns and for my hometown, Casey’s was the only “pizzeria” for miles… many miles. When we ordered pizza on a Saturday night you bet it was Casey’s pizza!

I know, I know… it’s a gas station but I promise it’s GOOD pizza! You have to try it sometime if you aren’t already a loyal fan like me!

To this day I still collect their coupons and crave their pizza! I have always loved their specialty taco pizza and was inspired to try my own version at home.

It goes a little something like this…

Homemade dough,

tacopizza (1 of 14)

essential refried beans and taco sauce,

tacopizza (2 of 14) tacopizza (3 of 14) tacopizza (4 of 14)

taco meat, onions (if you prefer), cheese,

tacopizza (5 of 14)

(even use up that small block of Velveeta you have sitting around! Just always use what you have!)

tacopizza (6 of 14)

cheese and more cheese,

tacopizza (7 of 14) tacopizza (8 of 14)

ah and the toppings! The best part!

tacopizza (9 of 14)

Assemble with pico (my recipe can be found here), lettuce, more taco sauce…

tacopizza (10 of 14) tacopizza (11 of 14) tacopizza (12 of 14)

and don’t forget the nacho cheese tortilla chips! Okay maybe that is the best part!

tacopizza (13 of 14) tacopizza (14 of 14)

I feel like a kid again! YUM!

Inspired by Casey’s General Store Specialty Taco Pizza!
Author:
Recipe type: Supper
Serves: 8-10
Ingredients
Pizza Dough:
  • 1 c. Whole Wheat Flour
  • 2 c. White Flour
  • 1 tsp. Salt
  • 2 tsp. Baking Powder
  • ⅓ c. Vegetable Oil
  • 1 c. Warm Water
Ingredients:
  • ½ can (8oz) Refried Beans
  • ½ jar (8oz) Taco Sauce
  • ¼ c. diced onion *optional
  • ¼ c. diced bell peppers *optional (I didn’t have on hand for this recipe)
  • 1 lb. Ground Beef, cooked and drained
  • 1 pkt Taco Seasoning
  • 1 c. Grated Cheese, Monterey Jack Blend
Toppings:
  • Taco Sauce
  • Pico de Gallo
  • Nacho Cheese Flavored Tortilla Chips, crushed
  • Iceberg Lettuce, finely shredded
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Pizza Dough: Mix together the flours, salt and baking powder. Gradually add the water and oil until dough forms a ball (I used a mixer with the hook attachment). Cut the ball of dough in half (this makes a double batch so I freeze the other half). Roll out the crust.
  3. Place dough on a large greased pan. Poke small holes with a fork and place in the oven for about 5-7 minutes (longer for a crispier crust) Then set aside
  4. Meanwhile, cook and drain the ground beef, add the taco seasoning as directed on package.
  5. Spread the refried beans onto the dough, add the taco sauce, onions, peppers, taco meat, and cheese.
  6. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden and cheese is bubbly.
  7. When serving, add lettuce, pico de gallo, crushed chips, and more taco sauce.
Notes
Additional topping ideas: Avocado, Sour Cream, Ranch, Regular Taco Chips, Black Beans… Anything you would add to your tacos!

Have fun with it and set up a “Build Your Own Taco Pizza Bar”!

We will definitely be making this one again soon!

Hope you enjoy!
